I'm in search for third-party software(freeware if possible) to
extract photos from usb digicams running on Windows, as I have made
bad experiences with the memory usage of the supplied software. On
Linux, there are third-party projects to access digicams, so it should
be possible to do that.

Card reader. Don't bother to connect the camera to the computer.

Use an inexpensive card reader which mounts the memory card as a removable
drive. Then use the regular system commands to copy.
