taking pics in the light

I was wondering what the best strategy is to take pictures into the
sun with a point and shoot. I'm asking this because on a recent trip I
did I made a lot of photos into the light, resulting in quite dark
pictures.
And while I'm asking, how could you solve that problem using a Maxxum
5?
